Organize for Fall + Winter: How to successfully transition between seasons

Updated: Oct 11

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, you know that means...

It's SWEATER WEATHER - and time to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall and winter.

Any seasonal shift is an opportunity to refresh and reorganize your closet(s). And with the steps below you'll be on your way to an organized wardrobe that not only saves you time in the mornings but also maximizes your space and keeps your seasonal pieces in great condition.

Here’s how to make this seasonal shift seamless and efficient:

1. Declutter First: Begin by removing all summer clothing from your closet. Not just clothes but shoes, belts, bathing suits, etc. As you take each piece out, ask yourself: Did I wear this? If not, separate them into piles: donate, sell, recycle. This decluttering step makes it easier to see what you truly love and need.

2. Clean Your Clothes: Before storing away your summer items, give them a fresh wash or dry clean. This prevents any lingering odors or stains from setting in, ensuring your clothes are ready for next season.

3. Categorize and Store: For items you’ll keep, consider using clear bins or vacuum-sealed bags to save space and protect them from dust. Label each container for easy identification next year.

4. Make Room for Fall/Winter: Once your summer clothes are stored, it’s time to bring out your fall and winter pieces. Give each piece a once-over - Is it still in good condition? Is it in style? Do I plan on wearing it? Does it need a cleaning? Repeat the sorting process: donate, sell, recycle.

5. Get Organized: For everything you plan to keep, organize items by type - jackets, sweaters, pants, shoes, etc. Within those categories, color-code them to make outfit selection a breeze.
