10 SIMPLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL GET ORGANIZED DAY

April 26 is National Get Organized Day, and if you're like most of the busy women I work with, organizing your home probably lives on your to-do list... but rarely makes it to the top.

If you’re juggling kids, work, meals, and what feels like the 800th load of laundry or sink of dishes, I get it. The idea of getting organized might feel overwhelming—or like something that’s only possible if your days and weeks magically become longer or you suddenly inherit an extra closet or full time cleaning crew.

But the truth is, getting organized doesn’t have to be a huge project.

It can be simple, sustainable, and more than a little satisfying.

In honor of National Get Organized Day, here are 10 of my favorite strategies to help you bring a little more order (and a lot more calm) into your home—without burning out or overhauling your whole life.

1. CONTAIN THE CHAOS

Baskets, bins, trays—anything that helps you group similar items together can instantly make a space feel calmer. Think: snacks in a bin, chargers in a drawer organizer, kids' art supplies in a caddy. If it has a home, it’s less likely to wander.

2. SET A TIMER

If you’re waiting for the “right” or “perfect” time to get organized, spoiler alert: that just does not exist.  But you CAN create parameters and implement structures that can help you find time within your busy life. Specifically, try setting a timer for 10 minutes and use that time to focus on a specific task.  Declutter a drawer. Toss expired food. Tidy the shoe rack.  These little organizing bursts of effort add up big.

3. LABEL EVERYTHING

Labels aren’t just pretty—they’re highly functional. They tell your brain (and everyone else in your house) where things belong. Use a label maker, masking tape, or even a Sharpie on washi tape. Bonus: You won’t be the only one putting things back where they go.

4. MAKE ‘RESET’ A ROUTINE

Forget deep cleans—those may be periodically needed but, in the short term, if that’s what you focus on it can be stressful and unsustainable. Instead, build in a 10-minute evening reset. Tidy surfaces, fluff the couch pillows, reload the dishwasher. It helps your home bounce back faster and start fresh tomorrow.

5. STORE THINGS WHERE YOU USE THEM

This one’s a game-changer: Store items at the point of use. That means sunscreen by the back door, batteries near remotes, cleaning supplies on each level of the house. If it’s convenient, it’s easier to maintain.

6. DECLUTTER AS YOU GO

You don’t need to block off a whole Saturday to declutter. Just keep a donation bag or box handy. When you notice a shirt that no longer fits or a toy no one uses, toss it in. Done and done.

7. CREATE A DROP ZONE

If the kitchen counter or dining room table is the default landing strip for everything, make a better one.

A tray for keys, a bin for mail, a hook for backpacks = less clutter and fewer lost items.

8. DO A 2-MINUTE MENTAL DECLUTTER

Before you dive into organizing your space, take two minutes to clear your mind. Jot down the to-dos swirling in your brain, the nagging thoughts, or the "I shoulds." Getting it out of your head and onto paper helps you focus and reduces overwhelm—because organizing your home starts with organizing your thoughts.

9. CHOOSE FUNCTION OVER PERFECTION

This is your permission slip to stop chasing the picture perfect pantry.  If it works for your life, it’s organized enough. Focus on what feels easier, not just what looks photo-worthy.

10. START WITH JUST ONE SPACE

Trying to organize your whole house is a fast track to overwhelm. Instead, ask: What’s the one space that’s driving me the most nuts right now Start there. Let that momentum carry you.
